Dave Hentosh: Bronze Sculpture

Artist's Autobiography

Dave Hentosh, Sculptor

My interest in animals, especially wildlife, goes back as far as I can remember. Growing up in a farming family, my life revolved around animals. Whether it was working on the farm or exploring in the woods, the natural world around me was as much a part of who I was then, as who I am today.

My earliest sculpting endeavors were modeling big game animals for my sisters’ dollhouses. In-depth study of animal anatomy and its relationship with behavior and motion started at the age of 10, when I began practicing taxidermy.

My college years started with pursing veterinary sciences, then switching to receive my degree in wildlife Management from the University of Maine, Orono.

While in college, I was introduced to Forest Hart, a kindred spirit in the study of animals. Through the ensuing friendship I was introduced to the world of bronze sculpting. With Forest’s encouragement and mentoring, I cast my first piece in bronze in 1998. Since then, I have produced commissioned works ranging from tabletop to monumental pieces.

I have been fortunate to be invited, participate in, and win several awards at art shows across the country, such as the Art of the Animal Kingdom at The Bennington Center for the Arts in Vermont. I was also fortunate enough to be commissioned to sculpt Barbara Walters’ dog Cha Cha and present it to her on the ABC television show The View.

These events have been flattering and educational, yet pale in comparison to seeing someone truly enjoy one of my sculptures.

It is my intention to bring anatomical and behavioral accuracy together in an artistic presentation. Done properly the sculpture should accurately depict the subject, while allowing the viewer to glean their own interpretation of the story being told.
